Familiar Elements: Visible + Invisible
Marybeth Rothman
& Elise Wagner

Shortly after the gallery opened in 2013, I was informed by one of our admirers of an artist worth taking a look at and possibly exhibiting. I found her online and was immediately taken by her concept and vision of figurative art and portraiture. Her photo-collage paintings were vaguely reminiscent of Pop celebrity portraits. But she eschewed the celebrity in favor of the anonymous, the forgotten figure; reimagining and transforming their lives with collaged details, fictional names, and placed in imaginary milieus of her own creation. Perhaps more important they were sensitive and sentimental in an art world that seems to often see those virtues as anathema to “high art”.
About that same time, another artist walked through my door, explaining that she had an appointment to show her paintings with another gallery in Pioneer Square but had spotted this and decided to check it out. She was from Portland and with a prominent gallery there but looking for representation in Seattle. She showed me a few small abstract paintings, the composition filled with lines and spirals scored along the colorful, topographically sculpted surface. She spoke of the sciences – cartography, physics, astronomy, etc as the basis of her artistic inspiration, and brought in a few more, even larger paintings, and as an uneducated but always curious science nerd, I was sold.
The New Jersey-based Rothman and Oregon-based Wagner were the first of the nationally recognized, emerging contemporary artists the gallery began representing in Seattle nearly twelve years ago and remain vital contributors to the gallery’s identity and highly valued by our collectors today. It’s truly been an honor to have watched their careers continue to flourish and receive critical recognition these last dozen years – from prestigious national awards, international teaching residencies, and important museum exhibitions.
For the first time ever, after each has been the subject of multiple successful solo shows with FH&Co, these two extraordinary, accomplished artists – as well as good friends from opposite coasts – working in a “familiar element” but divergent genres, will be exhibiting together in a unique two-person show.

Among Ms. Rothman’s most prestigious museum shows was MODIGLIANI AND THE MODERN PORTRAIT at the Nassau County Museum of Art, NY in 2023, which featured four of her contemporary encaustic photo-collage works in tandem with paintings by Modern Masters, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and others, along with Contemporary artists working in portraiture, Andy Warhol (1928-1987), David Hockney (b.1937), Eric Fischl (b.1948), and Alex Katz (b.1927).
Ms. Wagner, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant recipient and highly respected instructor and curator, leaves for the UK immediately following the exhibition’s opening where she’s been invited to teach encaustic Collagraph Printmaking in London, followed by a seminar on encaustic in Verona, Italy. Her annual instructional retreat for serious students of encaustic painting in Mexico City is consistently sold out. Her abstract paintings draw their aesthetic inspiration from Wagner’s deep interest in various scientific disciplines: cartography, physics, meteorology, astro physics, etc. She also has an important solo exhibition, CELESTIAL CURRENTS, opening at The Maryhill Museum of Art, Goldendale, WA, June 1 – July 31, 2025.

The exhibition premieres both new work created exclusively for this momentous show in tandem with recent paintings and works on paper from earlier presentations.
