Frederick Holmes and Company Gallery of Modern & Contemporary Art presents one of the most important and unprecedented exhibitions ever produced by a fine art gallery in the Pacific Northwest:

Salvador Dali & the Avant-Garde Circle of Pierre Argillet

May 1 - June 30, 2024
Surrealist, Salvador Dali, Inspecting and Signing His Etchings with Long-Time Publisher, Pierre Argillet, circa 1960s

PIERRE ARGILLET (1910-2001) was a French collector, photographer, and publisher of original prints by prominent members of the European avant-garde and surrealists; most of whom were his close friends. The most popular and well-recognized of them was unquestionably the Spanish surrealist, SALVADOR DALI (1904-1989). Beginning in 1960 through 1974, Argillet and Dali collaborated on a series of editioned original intaglio prints, producing nearly 200 etchings and engravings over that 14 year period. Most of these were created as a series exploring a particular theme of the artist’s interest, i.e. “THE MYTHOLOGY SUITE” (1963-1965); “POEMS BY MAO TSE-TOUNG” (1967); “LES HIPPIES” (1969-1970); and others.

However, Pierre Argillet also published numerous etchings by other critically important European avant-garde figures. For the first time ever in the U.S. these seminal contributors to European Modern and 20th century art history will be presented in this gallery exhibition with over 25 original etchings by Salvador Dali, and over 20 original etchings by GEORGE BRAQUE (1882-1963); LEONOR FINI (1907-1996); HANS BELLMER (1902-1975); GIORGIO de CHIRICO (1888-1978); JEAN COCTEAU (1889-1963); JOHNNY FRIEDLAENDER (1912-1992); JACQUES VILLON (1875-1963) and several others.

A very special offering are two unique, one-of-a-kind works by Salvador Dali: An exceptionally rare mixed-media painting on paper and a surrealist drawing, both from the private collection of Jean-Christophe Argillet, and offered for sale in this unprecedented gallery show.

(Coincidentally, it’s worth noting that 2024 is also the centenary of Surrealism’s founder, ANDRE BRETON’s first “MANIFESTE de SURREALISME” (Surrealist Manifesto), with exhibitions of Surrealism being celebrated in several museums internationally. 2024 also marks the 120th year since Salvador Dali’s birth.)

The Argillet estate is today managed by Jean-Christophe Argillet, son of Pierre and Genevieve Argillet, and it’s through his generosity and that of Greg Bloch, that this historic exhibition is possible.

SALVADOR DALI - RAYNAUD & CO. COLLECTION
Limoges Plate Collection

In 1959, Dali began his relationship with publisher Pierre Argillet, creating almost 200 of Dali’s most recognizable etchings. The Pierre Argillet Collection demonstrates high standards of quality, and the impassioned partnership between an artist and his publisher. In 1968, they worked on a fabulous collaboration with one of the world’s oldest and most respected porcelain artisans, Raynaud & Co. A selection of seven images, from the acclaimed Argillet collection were chosen to create this stunning group of limited-edition Limoges porcelain plates. This rare collection is from a small numbered edition of only 2000. Each plate includes a numbered plaque that acts as proof of authenticity.

The seven images that were chosen as the featured imagery on these beautiful porcelain plates, were part of suites created in 1968. That is the same year as this porcelain collaboration. The collection was done in the famous Bleu de Sevres, as it is referred to by the French Porcelain Society. There are very few official celebrated colors, Bleu de Sevres being the most well know. It is created using ground cobalt mixed with metallic oxides to achieve the radiant blue of the porcelain. The blue’s depth is accented by the delicate gold that brings Dali’s etchings to life on each plate.
