Making Her Seattle Debut –
Salt Lake City Based Educator & Artist
LINNIE BROWN
Opening March 5, 2025

Memories do not exist solely on their own; they are persistently entwined with the physical places where they occurred. In my paintings, fragments of landscape and abstracted architecture stand in for everything I have lived through in those places. My art depicts multiple locations simultaneously to convey the impact and accumulation of identity-shaping experiences.
Created through an intuitive process of layering and revision, each acrylic painting unfolds gradually. Traces of previous layers, as well as shifts in perspective and scale, give the work a sense of ambiguity and complexity. The process mirrors the idea of the work- negotiating layers and deciding what to hold close, change, or push away.
Linnie Brown is a painter who lives and works in Lehi, Utah. Her work, over the last twenty years, has centered on abstraction, complex layers, and the merging of disparate objects or time periods. Brown’s paintings, in more recent years, seek to convey specific and personal subject matter, with fragments of landscape and architecture from her own life. Her densely layered acrylic paintings reference accumulated memories and the process of navigating one’s identity.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Brown relocated to Utah to study painting and art education at Brigham Young University. She went on to receive her MFA degree from the University of Utah. Brown maintains an active exhibition schedule and shows her work regularly throughout Utah. Most recently, her work was included in group shows at the St. George Art Museum, the Springville Museum of Art, and in a 2024 solo exhibition at A Gallery. In 2020, she received an Artist Career Advancement Scholarship from the Utah Division of Arts & Museums. In addition to her studio work, Brown teaches part-time at Utah Valley University.
